TSA line up 30 swimmers for Africa championship

 Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA)    has selected 30 swimmers who will represent the country at the next month’s   Confederation of Africa Swimming (CANA) games slated for Mauritius.
 
TSA secretary general Ramadhan Namkomveka said the event in Mauritius will be used for qualifying berth of this year’s Olympic Games to be held in Brazil in August.
 
He said names of swimmers who made the Mauritius provisional squad will be unveiled today, but only athletes who will meet the standards set by TSA will travel to Mauritius  
 
Namkomveka who is also a professional swimming coach said TSA technical committee agreed that priority for the Mauritius CANA championships be given to freestyle swimmers as most of them are close to Olympic qualifying time.
 
He named qualifying time for freestyle women swimmers in group A of 17 & Under as 28.21 minutes for 50 meters women while for group B in the same gender and category are 30.21.
 
In 50 meters men freestyle 17 &Under, group A is 25.00 minutes group B is 26.30 while in men group A  100 meters free style is 55.90 while group B is 57.30 .
 
In women hundred meters freestyle group A, 17&Under qualifying time for Mauritius is 1.4.91 while group B is 1.6.91.
 
 “Over the years it has proved that freestyle is a category which we perform better and also most of our swimmers are close to Olympic qualifying time. In that category we will maintain the qualifying time rather than lower the marks, the bar  seems to have been raised for the swimmers, but the aim is to see them  strive and attain perform well at the Mauritius games and even at the Rio Olympics”, he said.
 
Meanwhile, Namkoveka said TSA is still looking for sponsors to send its five swimmers to Dubai for the championships which will be used as a qualifying berth for this year Olympics.
 
He said each swimmer needs more than $1,500 for return flight, accommodation and swimming outfits.
