Tanzania Women of Achievement (TWA) has announced the launch of the Pledge for Parity Campaign in commemoration of this year’s International Women’s Day care celebration. The campaign is a clarion call for this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) that calls on everyone to take concrete steps to accelerate the achievement of gender parity in the country. It also calls on the society to practice gender-balanced leadership, respect and value differences, develop more inclusive and flexible cultures and also root out workplace bias.
Speaking in a press conference at TWA offices in Dar es Salaam today, TWA President, Ms Irene Kiwia said that the aim of the Pledge for Parity Campaign is to call upon men and women to join forces and collectively help women advance equally and realize their limitless potential.
“This campaign is meant to call on all the stakeholders including the media, individuals and organizations to identify and create awareness on the gaps that hinder the progress towards gender parity and to pledge to take concrete steps to accelerate change.” Ms Kiwia said.
“The World Economic Forum predicted in 2014 that it would take until 2095 to achieve global gender parity. Then one year later in 2015, they estimated that a slowdown in the already glacial pace of progress meant the gender gap wouldn’t close entirely until 2133. This is a lot of years to wait on. TWA is therefore joining the world by urging Tanzania to put gender in the country’s agenda and speed up the clock to achieve gender parity quicker” further said Ms. Kiwia.
Mrs Sadaka Gandi, TWA Chairperson calling on individuals, organizations, the government and others stakeholders to participate, said that the campaign will start with a six kilometer walk on the 5th of March morning from the ‘Goat Race Grounds’, popularly known as ‘Uwanja wa Farasi”, through the junction of International School of Tanganyika (IST) and pass through St. Peter’s Catholic Church, through the Kenyan High Commission and back to the starting point. “The walk will be followed by an International Women’s Day Conference that will take place on the 6th of March 2016 at the Hyatt Regency, The Kilimanjaro Hotel. The conference will bring together men and women from different arena to share and inspire each other, show-case and train on what has been achieved on “Gender Parity” so far since The Beijing Conference 21 years ago, what gaps still exists and how we all can play a role to accelerate change. We believe that your support will not only contribute to the advancement of women’s cause but will also show-case your company’s contribution to the achievement of gender parity”.
“The Pledge for Parity Campaign will address issues affecting women in regard to education, health, leadership and economy all being important aspects of society development since they are all linked to economic growth. Women’s advancement and leadership are central to business performance and economic prosperity”, Mrs. Gandi concluded.
