Kinondoni mayor Boniface Jacob
Kinondoni mayor Boniface Jacob made the remarks when addressing journalists yesterday in Dar es Salaam.
“We are determined to use our internal revenues to fund our
development projects,” the mayor said, adding that the municipality
would also ensure that all schools get enough funding.
Jacob also confirmed that he’s a good leader who can ably steer
Kinondoni Municipality to the next level in terms of development.
“The municipality has all the resources and power to thrive on its
own without depending on anybody by raising its revenue collection more
efficiently,” he said.
“As I recently outlined, my priorities are to triple revenue
collection from 48bn/- to more that 100bn/- per year, infrastructure
improvement and keeping the municipal dirt-free during my
administration,” he noted.
Expounding further, he said the municipality was determined and ready to plug all loopholes that lead to loss of revenues.
“If we increase revenue collection, the municipality will be able
to manage its development projects including supporting free education,
building classrooms and other necessary requirements,” Jacob added.
According to him, there are several companies within the
municipality which avoid paying taxes and plunge the Authority in losses
of between 5 to 10bn/- every month.
He, however, alleged that there were several contracts that were
entered into illegally thus leading to loss of billions of money.
His remarks came at a time when President John Magufuli pledged to
take a pay cut worth 6m/- from his salary as well as that of the Vice
President and Prime Minister to fund the construction of classrooms in
Dar es Salaam-based schools, particularly those that have enrolled large
numbers of students this year.
