Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Simon Sirro
Police in Dar es Salaam have arrested a woman suspected of being a ringleader of a gang of armed robbers who stick up banks and use motorcycles as getaway vehicles.

The suspected mastermind was under police surveillance for some time and could have been seen visiting several banks in the city without necessarily making any transactions.

Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Simon Sirro told reporters in Dar es Salaam that as the manhunt for other suspects is ongoing, the suspected ringleader is now in custody.

The commander said the police arrested the suspected mastermind along with three other suspects.

“She was tracked down by detectives attached to the special intelligence unit while she was with three other suspects at their hideout at Buguruni-Kwa-Mnyamani,” he said.

According to Sirro, the mastermind confessed to have been involved in several robberies, including a recent one on February  17 involving theft of 12m/- property of David Isack (32), a resident of Mafinga in Iringa.

He said that Isack had withdrawn money from NMB Bank, Airport Branch in Dar es Salaam and was ambushed while on the way to deposit the cash at DTB Bank at Quality Plaza along Pugu Road in Dar es Salaam.
“The suspects attacked the victim as he was taking the money to the other bank. They fired in the air before grabbing the 12m/- and fleeing. Since the place is secured, police heard the gunshots and pursued the robbers,” he said.

When the robbers realised they were cornered, they threw away their weapon, SMG with registration numbers A/R/27/16, but it was too late as an angry mob took matters in their hands and lynched them.
Commander Sirro said that when the woman was arrested she was wearing attire commonly worn by female Muslims faithful to disguise her identity.

Meanwhile, police have also arrested another four suspected armed robbers who were plotting an ambush.
