Paradise:
Ilala municipal mayor Charles Kuyeko (L) receives
a copy of the Coalition of People’s Constitution (Ukawa) manifesto from
opposition Chadema’s Coast zone coordinator, Casmir Mabina.
Kuyeko unveiled his plans yesterday in Dar es Salaam when he was
receiving Chadema’s manifesto from the party’s Coast Regional
Co-coordinator, Casmir Mabina.
On infrastructure improvement, the mayor said he will not hesitate
to take disciplinary action against unscrupulous contractors.
“We plan to have more tarmac roads in the municipality which is the
catalyst for economic development and in turn a source for increased
revenue collection,” he said.
He further said that in improving education infrastructure, the
municipality will focus on building between five and eight classrooms in
schools to curb overcrowding in one class.
“It is simply not right for some 300 pupils to be crammed in one classroom; this just makes the learning experience unpleasant.
“We are going to make sure we reduce overcrowding in our schools so
children can get free quality education by creating a comfortable
learning environment,” said Kuyeko.
He cautioned that contractors who will build substandard roads
shall never be awarded other contracts by the municipality and
disciplinary and legal action will be taken against them and
irresponsible civil servants won’t be spared.
He further said they will seal all loopholes that lead to revenue
loss by monitoring all sources of income which include property taxes,
billboards advertising tax and as well as other levies.
“If revenue collection will be increased, the municipality will be
able to manage its development projects including supporting free and
better education that we have been talking about,” he stressed.
According to him, there are several companies in the municipality
that evade paying taxes and make the municipality lose funds on a
monthly basis.
On the issue of cleanliness, he said that they want to make the
municipality clean thus they have secured a loan from CRDB Bank which
will help in buying 18 new garbage collection trucks, which will be
distributed in the 36 wards.
“Our intention is to ensure that two wards are served by one
garbage collection truck, a move that will simplify the whole garbage
collection exercise in the municipality,” he said.
