Dar es Salaam. President Jakaya Kikwete has won this year’s African Achievers Award.
According
to a statement by the Directorate of Presidential Communications, the
awards committee picked him from a list of 1,202 nominees.
The awards-giving ceremony will take place today in Johannesburg.
However, the President will not attend in person because of other national engagements, the statement said.
“The
President will be represented by the minister for Justice and
Constitutional Affairs, Dr Asha-Rose Migiro,” the statement reads in
part.
According to statement, the minister will also
use the opportunity to deliver a speech entitled ‘Africa’s Unity:
Prospects and Challenges’, on behalf of President Kikwete.
The
award, organised by the South Africa-based Institute for Good
Governance in Africa, is aimed at recognising excellent individuals and
organisations that have distinguished themselves while contributing to
the growth and development of Africa. The focus is to motivate all
African leaders, including prospective ones, by recognising individuals
and organisations that have contributed remarkably to the development of
the continent.
The first African Achievers Award was
presented to South African Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu in
recognition for his fight for human rights, justice and peace during his
80th birthday in October 201
